By: Fast Lane Wireless

For the last five years, Nokia, Samsung, LG Electronics, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson have dominated the global handset market. For the very first time, RIM broke into the top five cell phone makers in Janurary-March, with the help of high demand for smartphones.

RIM has an estimate of 10.6 million shipped phones in January-March, beating out Sony Ericsson’s 10.5 million. Motorola sold 8.5 million phones in the quarter and Apple sold 8.75 million iPhones. Nokia shipped 107.8 million phones in the quarter; Samsung sold 64.3 million; and LG sold 27.1 million.

According to IDC analyst Kevin Restivo, “The entrance of RIM into the top 5 underscores the sustained smart phone growth trend that is driving the global mobile phone market recover.”
